Description
“And if this little work of mine comes into the hands of someone learned in this art, and it seems to them that in it there was something superfluous or lacking, they should cut out, remove or add as seems best to them, because I have now submitted myself to their correction and censure.” – Philippo Vadi
This digital download contains a new translation of Philippo Vadi’s “On the Art of Swordfighting”(MS Vitt. Em. 1324) by Jamie MacIver, in PDF format. Vadi’s work covers a range of weapons, but has a particular emphasis on the use of the longsword. His work has strong links to contemporary sources from the north of Italy, while still maintaining a unique style that incorporates influences from the wider regional fencing culture.
This new translation focuses on resolving many of the apparent inconsistencies and contradictions that appear in other versions, by looking carefully at the work as a whole to create a clear and coherent rendition of Vadi’s system, and uses the highest available quality scans. All images have been modified to have the background removed, making it much easier to view the images clearly. The “Open” edition provides the translation only with minimal commentary beyond explaining the translation choices.
